The kids are getting into it too

As you might have guessed the topic of music is talked about a lot. Char doesn’t always share all of my views and is at times worried that the secular garbage will be too strong and influence on our children or on me (I’ll let her defend the rest of her views).
Enter Jared our oldest (half way to 14 years old) and the following conversation:
Me: Jared, you should check out Michael Manring since you want to learn how to play the bass.
Char: What kind of music is that?
Me: (anticĂpating) It’s solo instrumental bass. No lyrics. So it’s okay!
Char: Oh
Jared: (snide) Yeah no problems with it. You know I could just sing a song about spaghetti and that would be fine. There’s nothing wrong with that it’s just about spaghetti.
Char: Well yeah but doesn’t the Bible say that no unwholesome or meaningless talk should come out of your mouth.
Jared: Yeah but it’s just spaghetti – I love spaghetti.
Char: Well maybe if you were complimenting Dad about how good a spaghetti he made it would have some meaning.
Jared: (making up lyrics on the spot to a new song) I looooove the spaghetti that my mom makes. It is so good. I loooove it.
Jared: (ramping up the chorus to the tune of The Badgers song) Jesus Jesus, Love Love, God God, Cross Cross. (still singing) Now this is a song that my thinks is good because of the chorus.
Dale and Jared: Jesus Jesus, Love Love, God God, Cross Cross.
(he is one funny kid - even char couldn't help but smile)

This is a very interesting topic. Here are a few thoughts:

- Pop music's objective tends to be to generate profits. Art music aims at informing the human being, in any number of ways.

- Hymn's have a rich heritage, and are meaningful, and nostalgic for many churchgoers. They are "christain songs" because the words are about biblical themes. What happens when you hear a hymn tune without the words. Is it a christian song still? Joyful Joyful we adore thee is movement IV of beethoven's 9th symphony (original text by schiller was about unity among mankind). "be still my soul' is an exerpt from Jean Sibelius' symphonic poem entitled "Finlandia".

- Music without words has meaning, and character. It can be noble or it can be crass. it can be tender or it can be lascivious.

- Composer Arnold Schoenberg wrote a piece called "A warsaw survivor". This music is not to entertain. This music is not to generate income. It is to inform.

The best thing to do with music is continually learn to be a better, more intellegent and critical listener.

- learning to listen, in saskatchewan

yup - I get that. video did not only kill the radio star - radio killed the artist.
commercialization has indelibly changed music. many would argue: negatively.
But here's a question would you say that music that is primarily aimed at making money ceases to be a real artistic expression?
does music's foci change its value and authenticity?
Is commercially succesful and viable music akin to mimeographed van Gogh?
