bye bye boston

for those of you who have followed my ardent support of this hapless team - you will know that i have perservered through many dismal seasons and some pathetic play. Ironically Boston has thrown a jersey over many a star hockey player (and then summarily taken it off thier backs again). All along I have believed in the might B's and even to my shame at times.

But here as of the writing of these words:

I hereby renounce my alliegance to the Boston Bruins.

I'm giving myself a Christmas present. A whole new hockey team. And I'm letting you in on the action. For Cristmas this year I want to pick a new hockey team to cheer for. I am opening this up for you to make your bid for my allegiance. Now such as it is my loyalty may not seem like much - admittedly I am not the keenest hockey mind in the world but I do think I have a corner on my cul de sac (and probably my office as well). anyway as you can plainly see for me the criteria for choosing a new team is not entirely based on thier ability to win. So let me out line a few criteria for you to consider in making your bid:

1. I have a strong preference for hard working under dogs

2. I prefer teams who were playing in the 80's - to go along with my musical preferences (expansion teams after the 80's will have a tougher time earning my allegiance)

3. No Toronto, or Montreal. There will be a Christmas miracle for me to choose any of those two.

4. The rest of the Canadian teams have a natural draw for me.

5. The management/ownership of the team must not have it's cerebral cortex implanted in the fecal excrement of it's own body. (Honestly the Thorton trade was the last straw. I can stand the Bruins not taking the cup year after year - but i can't stand stupid management moves that make not sense at all)

So there you go I look forward to your solicitations and advice.

REASONS why you should choose the flames: (1) have a history of hardworking, underpaid, sometimes a little angry players and staff(much like you and I - you should note), (2) are Canadian, even Albertan, (3) have had reasonable success in the past, and (4)are within earshot.
REASONS why you shouldn't choose the flames: (1) they are a bandwagon team right now - and no intellectual person chooses a bandwagon team, (2)they are having a good season, and so other people may have an opinion about your team. You will note that no one cared about the Bruins, and so it was easy to cheer for them.

So go on, I dare you to cheer for the flames...

There's a team I know that has always been an underdog. Even when they have had good teams there was a powerhouse in their division that easily ousted them from the playoffs. They work hard every night, mostly because the ownership can not afford to get the big contracts and they wind up with all the guys who were just good enough to make it in the NHL. They have been known over the years to draft wisely, especially finding young Russian and European talent in the draft. Their jerseys are very trendy these days, some would say retro. As for "...the team must not have it's cerebral cortex implanted in the fecal excrement of it's own body." If this were true the team would still be around.

Long live the Winnipeg Jets!

Steen and Hawerchuk up the middle, you got to be kidding me!

eva welcome welcome to bloggesville. Daring me to cheer for the Flames is a great way to put it...

"Show me the light", he says .... then immediately follows with "but I refuse to believe that the light is actually the light". Given the parameters you have set for your new enlightenment Dale, I'm afraid I will not be able to show you the light, not even now in your new found agnosticism. I suspected that Montreal would be a bit of a stretch for a former Bostonian (but I can join Patrick in praying for a miracle), however I had thought to suggest the Senators to you (whom I've held somewhat dear since well before it became fashionable to hold them dear), but you seem to want something older. Best wishes on your 'journey' and I too pray for a Christmas miracle.

Could it be, that we might actually one day be able to all get together and cheer for the same team??? With your dad and son also wishing for a miracle,do we dare hope??

At least you have teams to choose from that you can watch. Down here, the only team that they show on a regular basis is the St Louis Blues (even with cable TV). I just shake my head in shame everytime I watch them play.

But, I guess they would meet some of your criteria.

Ok...Dale...well the choice is clear for you...you could choose flames and jump on the bandwagon with the rest of Canada who only knew one player on the team. I am thinking this might be logical for you since you would take much more abuse cheering for anyone else, being in ALberta and all...but good choice is Vancouver! For petesake there called CANUCKS...how much more canadian do you want it? (and yes the irony is that they do have more swedes then IKEA) but still their a solid canadian team...my vote for you is Canucks...but what ever i guess you can flop for the flamers...

yeah i have to say morgo
that jumping on the bandwagon makes me reluctant to choose them. and I think given my former team choice I am well aquainted with harrassment so...
I appreciate your bid.

I you are looking for harrassment out west - consider cheering for a team from eastern canada - like the leafs. I think there are more people in Canada that hate the leaf then that love them. If you desire abuse join the only team that will continue to let you down just like the Bruins.

i also will believe that a miracle can happen. if you want the TRUE underdogs, come over to the blue side. There is no team like the Leafs. We can never really win - but we always love our boys. one year, it will happen - i feel it in my heart (which pumps blue blood by the way).
if you even follow Paul to the Canuck side...well, it's unexplainable, and unforgivable.

i'm starting to feel more and more like this is a bad Star Wars sequel. Thanks Janelle for your sincerity.
Pat while i am aquainted with greif and familiar with sorrow - My Boston Bruins annonymous group said it's okay to pick a team that won't let you down. Should i believe them?

Dale, I would try to persuade you to become a Flame fan but I'm not sure about your track record. Losing seems to follow you around (and other Bruin fans as well). With that in mind I suggest the Canucks. They're looking for a goalie, maybe you could even strap on the pads...

oh so you don't want me
and you think that will make me feel bad
is that a fat joke?

dale, after much careful consideration re: your free agent situation, I have decided that I should recommend to you...............................................................................

is the suspense killing you?........................................................................

THE LATVIAN OLYMPIC TEAM!

you want an underdog? There's an underdog for you - no high-priced whining talent, no consistent unloading of the team's best players for financial reasons (like your beloved Bruins), no reasonable prospect of ever winning anything. Seems like a good fit for you Dale. I look forward to your decision

dueck boys - I honestly expected a little more Christmas cheer from the both of you. I can see that neithr of you really considers my allegiance to one team or the other of any consequence whatsoever. Now I realize I may not be the most respected voice in the hallowed halls of hockeydom. But unlike you I have not had extra-marital relationships with a certain "OTHER" sport of the ball variety. And just because I haven't memorized the names of all the players in both sports (I prefer to memorize the holy book) and keep an active International to English pronounciation chart smartly locked in my cranium - DOES NOT mean that my weight as a fan is inconsequential. And just becuase I don't spend my valuable family time on making my selections for the hockey pools Doesn't make me a bad person. Both of you boys have barely been alive long enough to equal the amount of time I have spent following hockey and cheering for the Bruins. Latvia - wow ha ha ha
I know you didn't mean to be mean.
As for the rest of you I will announce my top three contenders shortly. A decision will emerge (Ryan do you like that word yet) by the new year...
